Spring training report

SATURDAY’S WEATHER: Sunny, about 85 degrees for the abbreviated workout.

FUNDAMENTALLY SPEAKING: It was the quickest workout of the camp as positional players were let out early and pitchers did some brief drills on the field before being dismissed for the day. Dave Dombrowski held court with some of those coaches involved with pitching and catching, including Pedro Martinez and Jason Varitek. Martinez also spoke to a group that included Dombrowski assistants Frank Wren and Tony La Russa.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Blake Swihart continues to take ground balls as he tries to get used to being an infielder. If Eduardo Nunez comes aboard soon, it likely would eliminate Swihart from the second base mix, even though manager Alex Cora had indicated Swihart would be one of the players in the mix to fill in for Dustin Pedroia, who is recovering from major knee surgery.

MEDICAL REPORT: There was no change with any of the players rehabbing their injuries. The focus was on Pedroia’s recovery as he goes through his rehab schedule and sticks to the plan laid out for him by the doctors. Pedroia doesn’t seem to be deviating from it, feeling he could reinjure himself if he tries to go rogue. Steven Wright continued his build-up to the point where he may be able to fully participate soon, but it still appears the knuckleballer will not be able to start the season on time.

AROUND THE BASES: There was an Open House at JetBlue Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. which included, music, food, and all sorts of activities for kids. The stadium was packed for the event. Also, Cora and Red Sox players met with three students from Parkland (Fla.) High School where the mass shooting took place last week. Cora said his players were happy to speak to the students and said the shootings put things into perspective for the players.

SCHEDULE: The Red Sox will go back to a more normal day of fundamentals on Sunday with players taking the field by 10 a.m.
