When spring rolls around every year, Bostonians expect certain sights — tulips popping up around the city, Red Sox fans crowding trains headed toward Kenmore Square, and of course, swan boats gliding gracefully around the Public Garden lagoon.
Mayor Martin J. Walsh will be the first rider on a swan boat when they launch at 10 a.m. April 14, according to a statement from the mayor’s office.
“This year the swan boats celebrate their 142nd season of providing joy and memories to residents and visitors in the Public Garden,’’ Walsh said in the statement. “We’re ready for spring in Boston and the tradition of joining the Paget family and local children for the first ride around the Public Garden lagoon.’’
Walsh will be accompanied by students Boston Public Schools students, including some from Ellis Mendell Elementary and Higginson/Lewis K-8 School, the mayor’s office said.
The students are assigned to draw the famed boats during art class. Randomly selected drawings will be displayed at City Hall to welcome spring.
