Coldplay to honor past, present, future at Super Bowl

Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin says the band’s Super Bowl halftime show will try to honor the past, present, and future. At a press conference Thursday, the band said that it will have the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles there to represent the future and Beyoncé — whose 2013 performance band members adore — for the past.

‘‘We’ve watched all of the other halftime shows many times and most of them are fantastic,’’ Martin said. ‘‘I think we’re going to try to celebrate those other years and hopefully make a show as memorable as some of our favorites.’’

Asked how the group would fit 16 years of music into just 12 minutes, Martin said, jokingly: ‘‘We decided we’d play all our number ones and then work out how to fill the other 10 minutes.’’

Coldplay did not reveal who else would join it onstage. The Carolina Panthers will face the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday night. The band members would not say who they’re rooting for. (AP)

Paris dance director quits

Dancer Benjamin Millepied, who choreographed for the 2010 movie ‘‘Black Swan’’ and is married to its star, Natalie Portman, announced Thursday he’s stepping down as dance director at Paris’s premier ballet company. Millepied’s efforts to innovate at the storied Opera de Paris have met mixed reactions since his arrival 15 months ago, and French media have reported tensions between him and some of the company’s star dancers. He said in a statement that he’s leaving for ‘‘personal reasons,’’ and that his role didn’t allow him enough time for ‘‘creation and artistic expression.’’ (AP)

LeBlanc to join ‘Top Gear’

The BBC says former ‘‘Friends’’ star Matt LeBlanc will be joining the broadcaster’s popular ‘‘Top Gear’’ television program, presenting the revamped car show with Chris Evans. LeBlanc, who starred as Joey Tribbiani on the NBC sitcom ‘‘Friends,’’ is the first non-British actor to host the show in its 39-year history. ‘‘Top Gear’’ has won a huge following with its mix of car tips, driving stunts, and jokey banter.
