Albert Robbat Jr., a Tufts University associate professor of chemistry, and his students used new, environmentally friendly technology to reduce the buildup of fat, oil, and grease in the plumbing of Somerville and Medford high schools’ cafeterias. The treatment eases clogged pipes and grease traps, preventing costly repairs and blocked municipal sewer systems. In contrast to the caustics and solvents typically used to combat clogs, Robbat and his team used a protein/polypeptide mixture that is biodegradable, nonflammable, noncarcinogenic, and nontoxic.

During the month of July, 10 percent of all sales at the Walsingham Gallery in Newburyport will be donated to Anna Jaques Hospital’s Community Health Foundation. The funds will help enhance services, provide advanced training to the hospital staff, and allow the purchase of specialized equipment and technology for 3-D mammography and robotic-assisted surgery.

The North Shore Bank presented Northeast Arc with a check for $1,200 raised by the bank’s weekly “Jeans Day’’ program, where employees are allowed to wear jeans on Fridays in exchange for a $5 donation. Employees choose which nonprofit will receive the accumulated funds. To date, the program has raised nearly $20,000 for local nonprofits. Northeast Arc, based in Danvers, helps people with disabilities become fully involved in their communities.
