The Coast Guard airlifted an ill crew member off of a car carrier vessel as the ship was sailing 45 miles southeast of Nantucket Thursday morning.
The crew member had severe abdominal pain that could not be adequately treated by the doctor on board the ship, the Liberty Passion, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
The helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod arrived at the Liberty Passion about 1 hour and 45 minutes after being alerted to the emergency. The crew of the Jayhawk helicopter lowered a basket to the deck and the crew member was lifted to the helicopter, a video released by the Coast Guard shows.
The crew member was flown back to Hyannis, where an ambulance crew took him to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment.
The Coast Guard quoted the captain of the Liberty Passion as saying, “awesome job Coast Guard and thank you very much.’’
