Michael Bomes stood amid a sea of supporters at Duxbury High following one of the most electrifying wins of his life and soaked in the moment.
“Best player in the state!’’ one fan yelled, and Bomes just laughed and sheepishly shrugged his shoulders.
The senior captain of the Wellesley boys’ lacrosse team was the driving force behind one of the spring season’s biggest playoff upsets thus far.
Bomes scored six goals — including the equalizer with four seconds left in regulation and the dagger in double overtime — to ignite the 11th-seeded Raiders past third-seeded Duxbury, 9-8, in a Division 1 South quarterfinal Saturday.
Every time Duxbury surged ahead, the Denison-bound Bomes responded. His masterful performance fueled the Raiders (14-4) to the semifinals, where they’ll face either BC High or Needham on Tuesday.
“He played unreal today,’’ Wellesley coach Jim Connolly said of Bomes. “He does it all for us. We’re peaking at the right time, for sure.’’
The game-winner came with 2:29 remaining in the second OT, moments after Mike Manning scooped up a ground ball.
It sent the Wellesley faithful into a frenzy, as the players mobbed one another near midfield and the fans passionately pounded on the bleachers.
In regulation, Duxbury (15-4) was a mere four seconds away from advancing, but Bomes spun past his defender and beat the goalie to send it into overtime.
The Raiders trailed, 3-2, at halftime, and 7-4 with 6:12 left in the fourth, but they rallied time and time again. Bomes – who recently became a member of the 200-point club – made it 7-6, then evened the score at 7, capping a 3-0 run spanning less than two minutes.
Junior Matty Gill, who paced Duxbury with five goals for the second-straight playoff game, rolled a shot in to make it 8-7, but Bomes had the last laugh.
“That’s our third or fourth overtime game this year, and we’ve never come out on top,’’ Bomes said. “We’re pumped to get the win.’’
