Malcolm Subban is in stable condition after suffering a fractured larynx on Saturday. The 22-year-old goalie was hit in the throat by a puck shot by a teammate during warm-ups before the Providence Bruins’ game against Portland. Subban is out indefinitely.
Subban was taken to Portland’s Maine Medical Center, where he stayed overnight. He was transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday for evaluation.
Zane McIntyre played against Portland on Saturday, stopping 35 shots in Providence’s 3-1 win.
Subban, the second goalie drafted in 2012, is 14-8-5 with a 2.46 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. He was recalled to Boston on an emergency basis when Jonas Gustavsson was placed on injured reserve because of an elevated heart rate. Subban backed up Tuukka Rask on Tuesday against Toronto, his hometown team.
Subban could be Rask’s backup next season or be used in a trade. Scouts consider him a future ace because of his athleticism.
