Officials along the South Shore and Upper Cape Cod said black ice caused numerous car crashes in the region on Monday.

Police departments in Carver, Duxbury, Billerica, Plymouth, and Marshfield sent out cautionary tweets throughout the day to alert the public to the icy roads and urge people to drive carefully. The National Weather Service also warned of freezing rain from Sandwich to Middleborough, especially on Route 25, according to its Twitter feed.

“Roads are definitely slippery and, if untreated, they can be very hazardous,’’ said Lenore Correia, a meteorologist in the Taunton office of the National Weather Service. “It’s freezing drizzle, so when it hits the ground, it freezes immediately, which causes black ice.’’

Marshfield saw about 15 to 20 crashes from noon to 2 p.m., said police Officer Mike DiGravio. None of them have been fatal, he said.

“It came out of nowhere honestly,’’ he said. “People are not realizing how slippery the roads are. They freeze up within minutes.’’

At times, there were four or five accidents going on at a time, he said, but officers were clearing the scenes quickly.

Massachusetts State Police reported black ice conditions in Duxbury on Route 3, causing multiple crashes.

In Carver, police said in a statement that Plymouth police responded to multiple accidents on Federal Furnace Road, which is Tremont Street in Carver, prompting Carver police to shut down traffic on Tremont Street leading into Plymouth.
