Now Mitch McConnell wants Republicans to rally behind Donald Trump, even if they disagree with much he has said. It’s what the party needs, according to McConnell.
And what the party has needed from its Senate majority leader, according to McConnell, is someone who would fight single-mindedly to prevent Barack Obama’s reelection in 2012, to repeal Obamacare, and now to go AWOL on a highly regarded Supreme Court nominee. McConnell lost the first two battles, and may win the third, but the party may pay a price as weak-kneed senators try to defend their failure to do their jobs.
When it comes to what America has needed, McConnell has not shown any interest. In fact, it would be hard to find in history anyone who has done as much to cripple all three branches of government. Yet Republican senators retain him as their leader.
Voters don’t like it. Remember how they cheered when Trump refused to say he would support a party insider?
McConnell is probably more responsible than any other person for the fact that all of us, including the Republican Party, are stuck with Trump.
