It was a net gain for Foxborough native Catherine Luciano at the Shriners Hockey Classic, as the senior notched the winning goal for the girls’ South squad in a 3-2 win over the North in Canton.

Less than a minute into the 3-on-3 period, Luciano redirected a shot from Needham’s Rose Evans to win the game and earn MVP honors.

“It was awesome. We played hard the entire game. From the start, I could tell this team clicked really well,’’ said Luciano. “Going into the overtime, I wasn’t nervous. I knew we had it in the bag.’’

Talent from all around the state was on display in both games at the 9th Annual Classic, which has raised more than $50,000 to benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children in six years.

“This is for kids that have suffered burns or have pediatric issues that have to get to our hospital from anywhere in the world,’’ said Peter Simmons, the chairman of the Classic. “We do get quite a few kids from South America, Honduras, Haiti, the Dominican Republic that can’t get the care they need in their own country. If we can help them and find out about them, we can bring them up to our hospitals.’’

Luciano raised more than $450 in just one night, collecting at a playoff game for the Foxboro High School basketball team.

“It’s amazing. The Shriners Hospital, they do so much,’’ said Luciano. “It’s awesome that it’s all for money for other people and how they save all these children.’’

For the North, Woburn senior Marissa Gregory scored, and Shrewsbury junior Delaney Couture sent the game to OT with the extra skater on with 1:23 left in regulation. Plymouth South junior Jordan Colbert and Milton senior Julia Scannell scored for the South.

“You get to do what you love for a good cause,’’ said Scannell. “It’s awesome.’’

“It goes to such a great cause,’’ said coach of the South team, John Findley. “To have the girls involved the last five years is tremendous. The game was awesome, it was the best high school game I’ve been to all year.’’

On the boys’ side, Boston College senior Danny O’Connell earned MVP honors with two goals and two assists in a 10-1 win over the South. Malden Catholic senior Colin Nestor and Shrewsbury natives Liam and Anthony Quinlivan each scored twice in the win.

“It’s just great to play for a cause like that. The crowd they got here was awesome,’’ said O’Connell, a Natick native. “All for charity, it was a great atmosphere.’’
