QB Griffin visits Browns

Quarterback Robert Griffin III visited the Cleveland Browns, said a person familiar with the situation. Griffin, who was released this month by the Washington Redskins, met with coach Hue Jackson and others Saturday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team is not disclosing its plans during free agency. The Browns were interested in drafting Griffin in 2012 but couldn’t work out a trade to move up as they were outbid by the Redskins. Griffin’s career has been on a steady decline since he injured his knee at the end of his rookie season . . . The Cowboys signed restricted free agent Benson Mayowa of Oakland to a three-year, $8.55 million offer sheet Friday, said two people with knowledge of the agreement who spoke on condition of anonymity. The Raiders have five days to match the offer to their defensive end. The Cowboys have been in the bottom third in the NFL in sacks the past three seasons, and are unlikely to bring back Greg Hardy after a tumultuous season filled with distractions related to his domestic violence case in North Carolina. Hardy also had declining production late in the year . . . The Seahawks agreed to terms on a contract with veteran linebacker and special teams standout Mike Morgan . . . The Bills signed safety Robert Blanton, who spent the past four seasons with the Vikings. Terms were not disclosed . . . Eric Winston was reelected president of the NFL Players Association. The Bengals offensive tackle ran unopposed Friday for his second consecutive two-year term.

Barnes suspended for altercation

Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes missed Saturday’s game because he was suspended one game without pay after the NBA said he tried to enter Milwaukee’s locker room and verbally challenge Bucks forward John Henson after both players were ejected. On Thursday, Henson blocked Barnes’s shot with 5.5 seconds left in the Bucks’ win over the Grizzlies in Milwaukee. After the play, Henson taunted Barnes and was given two technical fouls and ejected. Barnes was charged with a technical foul and ejected for continuing to use obscenities. Barnes told the Los Angeles Times that he was led astray by an arena worker. Milwaukee guard Greivis Vasquez was fined $15,000 for following Henson to the locker room, while Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo and center Greg Monroe were fined $10,000 each for their roles in the incident . . . The Pelicans are considering shutting down star forward Anthony Davis because of his knee and shoulder injuries, coach Alvin Gentry told the New Orleans Times Picayune. With 14 games remaining, the playoffs are virtually out of reach for the Pelicans. Gentry cautioned that the team needs to careful about overplaying Davis . . . The Nets signed guard Sean Kilpatrick to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed.

BaseballYankees’ Ellsbury hit on wrist by pitch

Jacoby Ellsbury was hit on the right wrist by a pitch from Atlanta’s Julio Teheran during the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Braves in Tampa. Ellsbury went to a hospital, and Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said a CT scan and X-rays were negative . . . The Nationals announced that they will rest pitcher Bronson Arroyo for up to two weeks before beginning rehab on his injured right shoulder. Arroyo is attempting a comeback after missing all of 2015 following Tommy John surgery and surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff . . . Tony Clark, head of the baseball players’ union, said there’s no decision yet on whether to file a grievance on behalf of first baseman Adam LaRoche. LaRoche retired from the White Sox on Tuesday after he said he was told by team president Kenny Williams to cut down on clubhouse access for his 14-year-old son. Clark said the union is “monitoring the situation.’’

Red Bulls rally to drop Dynamo

Felipe scored from the top of the box in the 77th minute to tie the game and tallied on a free kick in the 83d to give the New York Red Bulls a stunning 4-3 MLS victory over the Houston Dynamo in Harrison, N.J.. . . Matt Lampson had four saves, including a diving stop in the 68th minute, to help the Chicago Fire play the Columbus Crew to a 0-0 draw in Bridgeview, Ill. . . . Mauro Diaz opened the scoring in the 79th minute, Maximiliano Urruti added a fast-break finish in the 87th, and FC Dallas shut out the Montreal Impact, 2-0, in Frisco, Texas.

Novak Djokovic will meet Milos Roanic in Sunday’s BNP Paribas tennis final in Indian Wells, Calif. Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Raonicoutlasted David Goffin, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the semifinals . . . American Mikaela Shiffrin won another slalom ski race by a huge margin, with her closest rivals more than two seconds slower at the season-ending World Cup finals in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Shiffrin is unbeaten in slalom racing since February 2015. But she missed five races during a two-month injury layoff and couldn’t capture a fourth straight World Cup slalom title . . . The NHL suspended Flyers forward Chris VandeVelde two games Friday for elbowing Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews in the head . . . Tara’s Tango rallied from off the pace to collar 4-5 favorite Taris late and win the $500,000 Santa Margarita Stakes for older fillies and mares by a length at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. . . . Formula One will revert to last year’s qualifying system following a debacle with the new rolling-elimination format at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. The new system of rolling eliminations every 90 seconds proved confusing to fans in the first two segments and led to a quiet third session as most drivers elected to stay in the garage and save tires rather than go out and try to better their times. The old system was based on lap times at the end of each of the three segments of qualifying . . . Steve Pikiell of Stony Brook was hired as Rutgers’s men’s basketball coach, said a person familiar with the decision who spoke on condition of anonymity. Pikiell, a former UConn point guard, led Stony Brook to six 20-win seasons in the last seven years and had the Seawolves in the America East conference championship game four times before finally winning this year.

Texas A&M University suspended leading scorer Courtney Williams and guard Shlonte Allen indefinitely from the women’s basketball team for violating team policy. The suspensions were announced just before the fourth-seeded Aggies faced Missouri State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament . . . A college hockey referee was in critical condition after falling during pregame warm-ups and hitting his head on the ice in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association said thatOliver ‘‘Butch’’ Mousseaux, who was to work a semifinal game, was injured Friday.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard announced his retirement Friday after 593 NHL games. Bouchard spent parts of 10 seasons with the Minnesota Wild and is third in franchise history in games played, fourth in goals, second in assists and third in points.
