MADRID — The ousted mayor of Caracas pledged to spread his protest against Venezuela’s socialist government across the world as he arrived in Spain on Saturday, a day after escaping from house arrest and slipping past Venezuelan security forces into Colombia. Antonio Ledezma flew from Bogota to Madrid., and said he would fight Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from exile. (AP)

BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative bloc and two smaller parties pushed Saturday to find agreement on climate change and immigration, with an eye on producing compromises so they can move ahead with talks on building a ruling coalition. Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats and the Christian Social Union parties met with the probusiness Free Democrats and the left-leaning Greens. (AP)

Meteor lights up dark Arctic skies

HELSINKI — A blazing fireball lit up the dark skies of Arctic Finland for five seconds, giving off what scientists said was ‘‘the glow of 100 full moons’’ and prompting hurried attempts to find the reported meteorite. Finnish experts were scrambling to find where it landed Thursday night, according to Tomas Kohout of the University of Helsinki’s physics department. (AP)
