Japanese snacks, right to your door
By Debra Samuels

The Japanese are generous gift givers, and food is one of the most popular things to bestow. Presentation is as highly valued as taste. Snakku, a Japanese snack subscription service, combines both. Boxes contain a variety of individually wrapped, top-shelf savory and sweet treats, many available only in Japan, along with a taster’s guide. There may be only one or two of each item, so think like the Japanese do about food: small portions, large variety. Artisanal rice crackers, Japanese and Western-style sweets like red bean paste-filled mochi, and butter cookies with Japanese lime cream filling share space in an attractive box. Owner Shigeki Abe goes directly to small, family-owned snack makers whenever possible. He has curated a seasonal sampler of intense flavors and crunchy textures. The box is wrapped with a paper fiber furoshiki, a Japanese wrapping cloth, which is reusable. There are monthly, 3-month, or 6-month subscriptions available in a sampler size of $15 or the deluxe size at $38.95 per box. Shipping is free within the United States and Canada. The one-year-old company sends out about 1,000 boxes a month, according to Abe. The website offers lovely photos and a blog with stories of Japanese artisans and cultural information.
