If you hear someone say “Viking,’’ your mind most likely conjures up an image of large, blond men wearing horned helmets and pillaging throughout northern Europe.

But there’s a lot more misinformation about these Norse warriors than you may realize.

You probably don’t know that they never actually wore horned helmets (they have only been included in depictions since the 19th century), or that during the late 10th century, the Vikings’ exploration stretched far beyond Scandinavia into Greenland and North America.

The crew of a replica Viking ship, the Draken Harald Hårfagre, honored that history on Tuesday when they docked at Plymouth as part of an expedition that will journey from Maine to South Carolina. Along the route, the crew of the classic 115-foot longship will seek to spread the history of the Viking culture.

To that end, here are five not-so-known facts about these seafaring folks:

1. One major misconception about Vikings: They didn’t actually call themselves Vikings. We don’t know how they referred to themselves. In Old Norse, the word viking meant “piracy’’ or “freebooting voyage.’’

2. The Vikings were responsible for naming some of our days of the week. Wednesday comes from the great raven god Odin, also known as Woden. Tyr and Frigg, the god and goddess of war and marriage, gave us Tuesday and Friday. Thursday was named after one of the most famous Norse gods, Thor.

3. Excavators have found that Viking-era grooming tools were especially popular, indicating that Vikings were well-groomed and probably had good personal hygiene.

4. Viking women were allowed some basic rights like being able to inherit property and ask for a divorce.

5. Viking funeral ceremonies often had a flair for the dramatic. The bodies of prominent Vikings were placed on a boat with their belongings, which was then set on fire and pushed out to sea.
