Southcoast Health System is planning to cut its ties with Tufts Medical Center’s physician network and launch its own independent doctors group.
The New Bedford-based health system filed plans with the state to leave the Tufts network at the end of the year. The change, which applies to about 425 doctors, comes after Southcoast abandoned merger talks with Care New England Health System of Providence.
In its filing with the state Health Policy Commission, which reviews such deals, Southcoast said that it will be able to focus more on efficiency and coordination of care by running its own doctors network. Southcoast’s doctors have been part of the Tufts network since 2010.
“Southcoast Health has grown significantly . . . and we now have the opportunity to continue on our journey and create a clinically integrated network for the South Coast communities,’’ spokesman Peter Cohenno said in a statement.
The Tufts physician network, called the New England Quality Care Alliance, contracts with insurers on behalf of about 1,800 doctors. That number won’t change much with Southcoast’s departure because Tufts also will gain about 400 doctors from Hallmark Health System next year. The parent company of Tufts agreed earlier this year to acquire Hallmark.
“We look forward to continuing our relationship until the end of this year and wish [Southcoast] much success in the future,’’ Tufts spokeswoman Brooke Hynes said in an e-mail.
