Launched in April 2011, Newton at Home is a nonprofit membership organization under the national Village to Village Network umbrella, providing services and social activities for older residents, to build a community of friendship and support. Maureen Grannan, a Newton resident and executive director of Newton at Home, had this to say.

Q. What does Newton at Home offer?

A. We have a three-pronged approach. We provide practical services, such as handyman help, computer assistance, and rides wherever members need to go. The second is our vetted vendor list of carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and snowplowers who give our members a discount. Then there are our events, activities, and affinity groups — everything from book and knitting clubs to a dining group, which is very popular.

Q. What are the membership criteria?

A. You must be a Newton resident with at least one person in the household who is 60 or older. I go out and meet every new member because I feel it’s important for them to see a face of the organization from the beginning. I also make sure that what we offer meets their needs; otherwise, we’ll refer them to the appropriate agency.

Q. What does membership cost? A. The annual cost is $660 for an individual and $780 per household. There are also six- and nine-month memberships, and a limited number of reduced fee memberships for residents with modest incomes.

Q. How do members find out about Newton at Home?

A. Mostly word-of-mouth and through temples, churches, and schools. We also have a wonderful collaboration with Newton-Wellesley Hospital to help elders who are discharged get healthy food, pick up prescriptions, and drive to follow-up appointments.

Q. Does the winter present special challenges?

A. We have a Winter Buddy program in which volunteers reach out to make sure members have what they need to stay safe during storms. We’re looking to expand this year-round because so many people are isolated. The feedback we get says how much better members feel knowing that someone cares and is watching over them.

Q. Are you looking for more volunteers?

A. All the time. Right now, we have close to 100 volunteers ranging from 8 to 95 years old. We don’t require a certain time commitment, and that flexibility is part of our success. A lot of very caring friendships are formed, which is wonderful to see and what life should be about.
