The second-ranked Xaverian baseball team has been no stranger to drama this year.
On Saturday, for the second time this week, the Hawks battled to a walkoff victory, this one coming on a single by senior Blake DeCarr in the 10th inning that propelled host Xaverian to a 3-2 victory over third-ranked Plymouth North.
The game was a pitching duel, with Plymouth North (11-2) finally scoring in the top of the ninth inning on a two-out, two-run single by senior Justin Cabral.
In the bottom of the inning, Xaverian senior Colby Lewis reached on an infield single with two outs, and Eagles pitcher Brendan Ferrell issued back-to-back walks to load the bases.
The Hawks elected to pinch-hit junior Aidan McLaughlin in the ninth spot and on the first pitchhe roped a two-run double to left field to tie the game.
“That is what you want to do in a pinch-hit spot,’’ Xaverian coach Gerry Lambert said. “You want to get a good ball to hit early and put a swing on it.’’
Following a leadoff single by junior Tim Simoes of Xaverian (9-4) in the bottom of the 10th, DeCarr came to the plate looking to bunt. As he showed bunt, first baseman Cabral charged in and Ferrell attemped a pickoff with nobody covering the bag.
Simoes advanced to third on the error and DeCarr lined a hit up the middle to end the game.
“I felt like if I put it in the play there was a really good chance something good was going to happen,’’ said DeCarr. “I was just trying to hit it hard.’’
“The team doesn’t quit,’’ Lambert said. “We came in [down two runs], we got to work, and we got to business. You can’t teach that to a team.’’
