C’s forward goes from dunking to Dunkin’
By Natasha Mascarenhas

Patrons didn’t know quite what to make of the friendly, 6-foot-8 server at the Dunkin’ Donuts in Waltham the other morning. They probably thought the guy should be playing basketball, not fixing breakfast sandwiches. Well, he does. That was Celtics forward Guerschon Yabusele handling the morning rush — ringing orders, making coffee, and doling out donuts. The Globe chatted with Yabusele to see how it felt to ditch the court for the counter.

Q. How was your first time as a barista?

A. Actually, it was hard, I was really making the coffee trying not to mess it up too much. People didn’t complain about the coffee. Maybe when I left, people came back and complained. But at least while I was there, people were happy.

Q. What were people’s reactions when they saw you?

A. Really surprised because they didn’t expect to see an NBA player — especially a player from their city.

Q. How was the morning rush?

A. I like serving people. I like to give people smiles in the early mornings to start their day. So I was really grateful for that.

Q. Are you a coffee person?

A. Not really. I’m more of a hot chocolate person.

Q. I’m sure the Celtics diet isn’t donuts and coffee for breakfast. What do you usually eat?

A. Sometimes cereal and hot chocolate. Other days omelettes. It’s usually just a hot meal.

Q. You worked a shift — and then the team won. Would you consider making this a pre-game ritual?

A. If they ever want me back, or to work over there, I’d come back. They gave me donuts to give to the players.
