Bishop testifies on sex abuse charges
SANTIAGO — Bishop Juan Barros, the Chilean cleric accused of covering up sex abuse by a pedophile priest, has testified before a Vatican team looking into the allegations. The Rev. Jordi Bertomeu, one of the investigators, did not say when the interview occurred or whether Barros appeared voluntarily. Barros has been accused by victims of witnessing and ignoring the abuse of young parishioners by the Rev. Fernando Karadima, who was removed from ministry in 2010. Barros has denied the allegations. Car bomb kills 21 in Mogadishu
MOGADISHU — Two car bomb blasts in Somalia’s capital killed at least 21 people and shattered a months-long period of calm in Mogadishu, which is often the target of attacks by the al-Shabab extremist group. The first explosion Friday occurred near the country’s intelligence headquarters. The second happened near Parliament, where the vehicle had tried to speed through a checkpoint before security forces engaged with the gunmen. (AP)

Nobel laureates to meet refugees
DHAKA — Three female Nobel Peace laureates began a weeklong trip to Bangladesh on Saturday to meet Rohingya Muslim women who were tortured and raped by soldiers in Myanmar before fleeing the country. During their visit, Iran’s Shirin Ebadi, Yemen’s Tawakkol Karman and Northern Ireland’s Mairead Maguire will assess the violence against the Rohingya women and the refugees’ overall situation as part of the Nobel Women’s Initiative. Red Cross details sexual misconduct
LONDON — The International Committee of the Red Cross has joined the list of prominent charities that have uncovered sexual misconduct among its staff. ICRC Director-General Yves Daccord said 21 staff members have resigned or been fired since 2015 after violating the aid agency’s policies by paying for sexual services. Two others did not have their contracts renewed because of suspected sexual misconduct. (AP)

29 detainees escape from jail
JOLO— At least 29 detainees escaped from a jail on Saturday when a guard left his post, but 17 were captured when law enforcers fired warning shots. The 12 who managed to escape were facing drug charges and were being hunted by police, troops, and village guards in nearby towns. The jailbreak was staged when a police guard left to take a break.
