Orpik suspended 3 games for hit

Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik was suspended three games for his late hit to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta in Saturday’s Game 2. Orpik will miss Game 3 Monday, Game 4 Wednesday, and Game 5 Saturday. He'd be eligible to return if the series, which is tied 1-1, gets to Game 6 on May 10. Orpik hit Maatta in the head after the puck was gone four minutes into Game 2 and he was given a two-minute minor for interference. After a hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety Sunday, the punishment was far more severe. Maatta left the game and did not return . . . The Panthers’ Jaromir Jagr, the Penguins’ Pascal Dupuis, and the Rangers' Mats Zuccarello are the finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy as the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

Leicester City title on hold

One of the biggest underdog stories in sports, Leicester City winning the English Premier League, remains on hold. The Foxes missed their first chance to clinch the champ­ionship, drawing 1-1 at host Manchester United. A win would have sealed the title for Leicester, a modest team from central England that narrowly escaped relegation last season. The Foxes’ remaining games are against Everton at home and Chelsea away. The team was a 5,000-1 shot to win the title with British bookmakers before the season. Second-place Tottenham, which is 8 points behind Leicester, must beat Chelsea away Monday to keep alive the title race . . . In MLS play, Diego Valeri scored on a free kick in the 74th minute to give the host Portland Timbers a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC . . . Giovani dos Santos scored to help the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy tie Sporting Kansas City, 1-1, and extend its unbeaten streak to six games . . . In NWSL, Dagny Brynjarsdottir headed home a cross from Tobin Heath in the 79th minute as the Portland Thorns defeated the Boston Breakers, 1-0, in front of 3,698 at Jordan Field . . . Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen was one of 40 players selected by US national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann for his preliminary ­Copa America roster. The US team starts training May 16 in Miami.

NU men, women prevail

The Northeastern University men’s rowing team closed the regular season on the Charles River by capturing its fourth straight Congram Cup against the University of Wisconsin. The Northeastern women’s team won four medals at the Eastern Sprints, as the varsity eight won a silver medal for the first time since 2012. Also earning medals for the NU women were the second varsity eight (silver), varsity four (bronze), and third varsity four (silver).

Radwanska, Kerber upset

Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber were upset in the opening round of the Madrid Masters in Spain. Radwanska, who was elevated to the No. 1 seed when Serena Williams withdrew, was beaten, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, by Dominika Cibulkova. The second-seeded Kerber lost to Barbora Strycova, 6-4, 6-2 . . . Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Dominic Thiem, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), to win his third BMW Open title in Munich . . . Unseeded Diego Schwartzman staged a stunning comeback to upset second-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, and claim his maiden ATP Tour title at the Istanbul Open in Turkey . . . Nicolas Almagro recovered from a set down to beat Pablo ­Carreno Busta, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, and win the Estoril Open final in Portugal. Almagro claimed his 13th career title — all on clay — and his first since Nice in 2012.

Nyquist runs at Churchill

Nyquist, expected to be the favorite for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, stepped onto the track at Churchill Downs for the first time to begin ­final preparations. The undefeated colt jogged once around the sloppy oval under exercise rider Jonny Garcia. Trainer Doug O'Neill says Nyquist will jog again on Monday. The colt arrived at Churchill Downs on Saturday from Keene­land, where he had been stabled since winning the Florida Derby . . . Two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum will pitch for major league clubs in a showcase event Friday in Arizona as he attempts to make a comeback from hip surgery last year . . . George Karl, who was fired as Kings coach April 14, told the Sacramento Bee in an interview published Saturday that he did not feel empowered by the NBA team’s front office and never “got into a good place’’ with mercurial star DeMarcus Cousins . . . Kenya’s Kipkoech Ruto and Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Dakebo won the Pittsburgh Marathon. Ruto finished in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 27 seconds in the men’s division. Dakebo was the first woman to finish with a time of 2:39:17 . . . Nico Rosberg cruised to victory in the Formula One Russian Grand Prix as his title rival and teammate Lewis Hamilton battled through the pack for second.
