Barriers will soon be installed along the side of Washington Street in West Newton where a vehicle crashed into a restaurant earlier this year, killing two people and injuring the driver and seven others.

The city of Newton will erect around 13 bollards, or posts, to serve as a barrier between the street and the businesses on that block, said Stephanie Foner, the city’s director of community engagement.

In early March, an SUV failed to stop while coming down Chestnut Street and crashed into Sweet Tomatoes Pizza in West Newton Square, killing two customers and injuring seven people.

The crash is still under investigation by Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan.

The driver, identified in Registry of Motor Vehicles records as Newton resident Bradford Casler, 55, has not been charged in connection with the crash.

The barriers will be installed in August before the restaurant’s reopening. Since the crash, Sweet Tomatoes has remained closed but hopes to reopen by the end of summer, according to the owner.

In addition to the protective barriers, West Newton Square will be undergoing a larger enhancement project, focused on streetscape, traffic patterns and signalization, and beautification of the streetscape.
