Natick volleyball overcomes rust

The Natick boys’ volleyball team looks rusty.

But if winning six of seven sets against a quality Bay State Conference foe qualifies as rust, then what will the Redhawks look like in a month?

Returning every player from a squad that took eventual state champion Westfield to five sets in last year’s state semifinals, Natick looked dominant for stretches of time, masking some uncharacteristic errors in cruising to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-14 sweep of host Newton North Wednesday afternoon.

“We won, but as a coach I am not happy with the performance because I know we can play better,’’ said Natick head coach Peter Suxho. “So when I say perform, I mean percentages. I’m asking everybody to hit positive on the court so we don’t have that. And our numbers are low compared to what we can do.’’

The Redhawks (2-0) jumped on Newton North early, using a lethal combination of seniors Max Waltzman (20 kills), Matt Flaherty (9 kills, 4 blocks) and Tyler Klein (11 kills) to jump out to a 20-10 lead. The Tigers (0-1) wouldn’t go down quietly, as senior outside hitter Chris Gavris (10 kills) spearheaded an 11-3 run to make it interesting, but couldn’t reclaim the lead to take the first set.

Natick jumped out to the same 20-10 advantage in the second set, but this time didn’t allow the Tigers to get back into it before slamming the door. The Red Hawks streaked to a 12-3 lead in the third frame, with Peter Thabit serving. It prevented Newton North from making a final spirited comeback and closed out the sweep. But for a team with state championship aspirations, a mere sweep was not good enough.

“We’re not where we want to be yet, and the focus is to get better every day,’’ said Waltzman. “We can’t go into games thinking teams aren’t this, teams aren’t that. We’ve just got to worry about us, play our best every game and just get better every day.’’

With stiff tests like Wellesley and Needham on the schedule this month, the team featuring eight seniors in significant roles has the chemistry to shake off the rust quickly.

“Our team has a lot of seniors,’’ said Suxho. “Last year was harder. This year must be more easy because they’re a year older, one year more experienced, and have played with each other. I’m waiting for a better performance. I think it’s coming.’’

Norwood 3, Wellesley 0 — Senior captain Jake Fleming had 17 kills and eight aces for the Mustangs (1-1).

Essex Tech 3, Somerville 0 — Senior Tony Johnson led the way with nine kills and 4½ blocks, and sophomore C.J. Klass chipped in seven kills as well.

Lexington 3, Andover 1 — Senior Jihoon Ko had eight kills, 12 digs and 15 service points for the Minutemen (3-0).

Lincoln-Sudbury 3, Arlington 1 — Senior captain Tristan Wolf had nine service points and 13 kills for the Warriors (3-0).

Haverhill 3, Methuen 1 — Spencer Dellea (16 kills, 2 blocks), Connor Buscema (7 kills, 3 aces, 18 digs) and Cooper Gibbs (4 kills, 5 aces, 30 assists) powered the Hillies (1-0) to a season-opening victory.

Billerica 8, Reading 7 — Senior midfielder James Einarson had a hat trick for the Indians.
