What a difference a year can make.
Last season, the Matignon girls’ hockey team finished with a 0-18-2 record. But with a 2-0 win over fifth-seeded Medfield in the Division 2 quarterfinals at Gallo Arena in Bourne Saturday, the Warriors are on their way to the state semifinals.
With four minutes left in regulation, Matignon senior Rose Sullivan potted the winner after the puck hit off teammate Sam Lawler’s skate.
“That was the only way a goal was going to be scored,’’ said Warriors coach Mark Wall. “I knew that it was going to be an ugly goal that would win that game.’’
The much-deeper Medfield team peppered freshman goalie Lydia Rasher with 29 shots, but she stayed composed and held her ground.
“This game, it was do or die,’’ said Sullivan.
Sophomore Courtney Hardy sealed the win with an empty-netter.
“We’re going to fight until we can say we’re state champs at this point,’’ said Sullivan. “All you have to do is believe.’’
Matignon (16-1-5) faces Notre Dame of Hingham on Monday at Gallo Arena for a berth in the Division 2 state final.

Notre Dame (H) 8, Methuen/Tewksbury 2 — Senior center Caroline Hocking recorded a hat trick to lift ninth-seeded Notre Dame of Hingham to a win over Methuen-Tewksbury in the quarterfinals at Gallo Arena. The Cougars (16-4-2) face Matignon in the semifinals.
Notre Dame opened the first period with a timid attack, but steadily gained traction. At 6:39, Hocking scored the first goal of the game with a shot that caromed in off the far post.
“First period, things were pretty tight, and then we started taking over,’’ said Notre Dame coach Jean-Yves Roy.
Holding a 2-1 lead after the first period, Notre Dame’s four-line attack proved too much for the two lines of Methuen/Tewksbury (17-2-3).
The Cougars exploded for four goals in the second and two more in the third.
“They do their job, they work hard, and eventually, it wears the other teams down,’’ said Roy.
Wellesley 2, Medway/Ashland 0 — Kiely Noonan’s strike four minutes into the first lifted the Raiders at Gallo Arena in Bourne. Wellesley (17-2-2) will face Plymouth in the semifinals.
Senior Carley Boyle contributed two assists.
Plymouth 4, Pembroke 1 — At Gallo Arena in Bourne, Mia Sacco had a goal and two assists to help Plymouth (18-4-1) advance to the semifinals.
Shannon Colbert added a goal and an assist.
