SIGN OF THE TIMES

This week Apple announced the addition of more than 100 new and redesigned emoji to its forthcoming iOS update, including a rainbow flag, a range of female athletes and professionals, a wider variety of family icons, and a major makeover for the gun emoji, which now appears as a green water pistol. (See? Common sense emoji reform is possible.) It remains to be seen how Apple will address other threatening emoji like bomb, knife, syringe, sword, bow and arrow, (probably poisonous) snake, and rolled-up newspaper.

TITLE BOUT

Pop some corn and lose yourself in #DonaldTrumpTheMovie, the blockbuster hit hashtag that has already produced a canon of instant classics, including “The Lyin’ King,’’ “Proud & Prejudice,’’ “Citizen Vain,’’ “The Fascist and the Furious,’’ “Neither an Officer Nor a Gentleman,’’ and (oh man) “Melania and the Giant Peach.’’ Never lose faith in the goodness of America. NEVER.

CRITTER MISS

There’s been no shortage of problems plaguing the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio (striking police, “uninhabitable’’ housing, street crime, Zika fears). But one thing there has been a troubling shortage of is Pokemon. Turns out the worldwide smash app Pokemon Go! hasn’t rolled out yet in Brazil, and it’s harshing the mellow of many an athlete. Pro tip: If you really need to catch something in Rio, just go swimming.

LOVE AT FIRST SLIGHT

And now for something a little lighter. A Dutch man was hospitalized for exhaustion and heartbreak after flying nearly 3,000 miles to China and spending 10 days in the airport waiting to meet his online girlfriend of two months, who never showed up. On the upside, the airline gave him like 10,000 frequent cryer miles.
