Woman arrested in fatal hit-run

Police on Thursday arrested a Milford woman on charges stemming from a hit-and-run crash that killed a 4-year-old boy in that town on Easter Sunday, authorities said.

Detectives arrested Melissa Knight, 54, in Newton in connection with the crash that killed Jonathan Loja, Milford police said in a statement.

She is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Milford District Court on charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash after causing injuries resulting in death and misleading a police investigation, officials said. Police Chief Thomas O’Loughlin said Knight voluntarily spoke to detectives on the Wednesday after Easter, after seeing an image on the news of what appeared to be her Chevrolet Traverse SUV.

Detectives observed damage to her vehicle in a public parking lot and impounded it, O’Loughlin said.

A possible phone number for Jonathan’s family in Framingham was not in service on Thursday. Calls to numbers listed for Knight were not immediately returned.

Jonathan was playing on Water Street, where he and his parents had come from Framingham to a relative’s home, when a vehicle struck him on April 16, officials said.
