A Weymouth man allegedly stabbed his estranged wife to death in Norton on Wednesday night and then crashed his truck into oncoming traffic on the highway, seriously injuring another driver, authorities said.

Martin McDonald, 35, is charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his wife, Julie A. Meede, 34, inside her Norton apartment, Bristol District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III’s office said in a statement,

Police arrested McDonald after the crash. He will be arraigned Thursday in Attleboro District Court.

According to prosecutors, Norton police went to Meede’s apartment on Holmes Street around 7:25 p.m. after receiving a 911 call for a person being stabbed. Police and firefighters discovered Meede unresponsive inside the residence. She was pronounced dead at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Quinn’s office said.

Prosecutors did not specify who had called 911, though a spokesman for Quinn said McDonald was not the caller.

About a minute after the call was made, State Police were alerted to a two-car crash on Interstate 495 in Norton, just south of the Route 123 interchange, the statement said.

The preliminary investigation shows that McDonald was driving his Dodge Ram on I-495 southbound when he crossed the grass median and entered the northbound side of the road, colliding with a Nissan driven by a 30-year-old Smithfield, R.I., woman, according to Quinn’s office.

The woman, whom authorities did not identify, suffered a serious injury and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Information on her injury and condition was not available.
