A Lowell man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly running down a 15-year-old boy with his car on Friday in an attempt to kill him, Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office announced.

Calvin Sousa, 21, will be arraigned Wednesday in Lowell District Court and charged with armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, Ryan’s office said in a statement. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation is still open, the statement said.

Police believe Sousa struck the boy, who was riding a bicycle at the time, on Lawrence Street in Lowell at around 2:30 p.m. and then fled the scene.

The victim suffered severe internal and head injuries and is currently in stable condition at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Directly after the incident, Lowell police Captain Timothy Crowley told the Globe, “It is believed that the occupants of the vehicle knew the victim.’’
