A full-scale counterterrorism exercise by Boston Police, the Department of Homeland Security, and several other agencies will bring the sound of explosions and gunfire to Fenway Park on Sunday morning, and residents are advised to avoid the area.

The exercise will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in and around Fenway Park, and will include simulated explosions and realistic-sounding gunshots between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to a statement from Boston Police.

“The more we can practice these drills and have these exercises, the better prepared we’ll be, and the safer people going to these large venues will be,’’ said Officer Rachel McGuire, a Boston police spokeswoman. “It’s not just about Fenway Park. In the bigger picture, it’s about making all of our ballparks safer for their patrons.’’

The exercise will also include several security methods such as dogs, metal detection, and drones.

In addition to police and the Department of Homeland Security, the Army Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center will participate.

Vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be heavily affected throughout the morning, according to police.

No public or media access to the park will be allowed during the event.

Two streets will be closed: Yawkey Way, from Brookline Avenue to Boylston Street; and Van Ness Street, from Ipswich Street to Richard B. Ross Way.
