EU pressured over paper’s takeover

ANKARA — The European Union is facing increasing pressure to speak out against the erosion of media freedom in Turkey following the takeover of the country’s largest-circulation newspaper, but few expect it to take a bold stance toward Ankara while trying to assure its help in dealing with the migration crisis. The headquarters of Zaman newspaper is now surrounded by police fences. The paper is linked to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s top foe, US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen. (AP)

Cardinal must face charges over abuse

PARIS — One of France’s best-known cardinals must defend charges that he failed to denounce a priest allowed to keep his job despite admitting to acts of pedophilia. The Conference of Bishops of France said on Saturday that there would be ‘‘complete cooperation’’ by Cardinal Philippe Barbarin. Barbarin has said he was convinced the priest had reformed in 2007-08, when they met, and allowed him to stay on. The priest was removed last year after victims stepped forward. (AP)
