Area carnivores still mourn the closure of the John Dewar & Co. butcher shops in Newton and Wellesley. After T.F. Kinnealey & Co. bought the local butcher in 2006, the owners eventually folded it into their 77-year-old meat processing and distribution business. (Kinnealey meats are sold mostly to food service and restaurant accounts, although the company operates a retail shop at the Fruit Center Marketplace in Milton.) But Dewar’s beloved steaks and chops — those “produced according to John Dewar specifications,’’ says co-owner John Kinnealey — are still sold at Volante Farms in Needham. In the farm store’s refrigerated meat case are old favorites such as sirloin steak (currently $24.99 per pound), skirt steak ($19.99), hanger ($17.99), flank ($8.99), and dry-aged sirloin ($28.99). Also under the Dewar label are pork chops, lamb rib chops, veal cutlets, and ground beef. They’re just what you need for your Labor Day cookout.
