SHINE A LIGHT From floating lanterns to a night of comedy, Greater Newburyport Ovarian Cancer Awareness is hoping to get people’s attention about the disease.
The volunteer organization, founded in 2011, presents its sixth annual Lantern Festival at the Bartlet Mall in Newburyport the evening of Sunday, Sept. 4.
Lanterns are floated on the pond in an Asian tradition of remembering family and friends and making wishes for the future.
The event, 6 to 8 p.m., is open to the public. There’s no charge for the lanterns, but a donation of $10 is suggested. Decorating materials and calligraphers are available.
Things take a bit of a turn Friday, Sept. 9, when the group hosts the Boston Comedy Project, a foursome of female comics, at the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport.
Kathe Farris, Erin Jackson, Kelly MacFarland, and Jennifer Myszkowski each have a following of their own, but when they get together, it’s a whole new experience.
Light refreshments are served in the lobby of the theater, which is in Market Square, at 7 p.m.; the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. A reception with the comedians follows the show. Tickets are $28.
Aside from direct assistance to local patients and their families, proceeds benefit the nonprofit Ovations for the Cure.
