KISSIMMEE, Fla. — A suspect in the fatal shooting of two police officers in Florida will be staying in jail.

A judge on Sunday denied bond for 45-year-old Everett Miller, saying there was probable cause for his first-degree murder charge.

Miller also is facing charges of resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon. Other charges are expected to be filed, police said.

Miller wore handcuffs and shackles during the first appearance hearing that lasted a minute and a half. Authorities say he fatally shot Sergeant Sam Howard and Officer Matthew Baxter of the Kissimmee Police Department during a scuffle on Friday night.

Funerals for the two officers have been scheduled for Thursday.

The Kissimmee Police Department said Monday that services for Officer Matthew Baxter and Sergeant Sam Howard will be held at the First Baptist Church in nearby Orlando.

The officers were shot in a neighborhood known for drug activity. Police say Miller fired on the two officers after he got into a scuffle with one of them. He was later arrested at a bar.

Police Chief Jeff O'Dell said Howard responded as backup after the scuffle began. Investigators said the officers did not have an opportunity to return fire. They weren’t wearing body cameras.
