The Massachusetts Fire Service Commission has selected Peter J. Ostroskey, the current deputy state fire marshal, to take over the top job.
The commission said in a statement that it picked Ostroskey for the state fire marshal post at its meeting on Wednesday, and that he will begin in his new position on Monday.
“I really look forward to working with our partners out there . . . to further the fire safety message here in Massachusetts,“ Ostroskey said.
Current Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coanannounced in November that he would retire after 20 years on the job.
“We have confidence that he will build on the legacy of retiring State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan,’’ Everett Fire Chief David Butler, chairman of the Fire Service Commission, said in the statement. Butler said Ostroskey would “bring a new vision on how to most effectively train firefighters and protect the public through strong codes, uniform code enforcement, and public education.’’
Butler said the commission interviewed several applicants before selecting Ostroskey.
The Department of Fire Services is responsible for assisting fire investigations and promoting firefighter and public safety, according to the agency’s website.
“I look forward to working with Deputy Ostroskey,’’ said Daniel Bennett, the state secretary of public safety and homeland security. “He is the right person to lead the agency through this transition and will be a strong member of the public safety team.’’
Ostroskey has more than 30 years in fire service work, the statement said. After rising to the position of fire chief in Uxbridge, he was the deputy director of the Statewide Emergency Telecommunications Board, now called the State 911 Department.
“The fire service is constantly changing, and we need to be reactive to that,’’ he said. “I’m really excited about what the future holds for us, and I look forward to meeting the challenges.’’
