Newton South gives boot to Newton North

Veronica Burton and Sayawni Lassiter have had a friendly rivalry since the fourth grade. They have played as teammates and against each other for as long as they can remember, but Thursday’s Division 1 South basketball quarterfinal matchup was one they’ll never forget.

Newton South’s Burton, a junior, registered a double-double with 29 points and 14 rebounds as the sixth-seeded Lions knocked off third-seeded Newton North, 59-45.

While Lassiter, a senior who is committed to play at Florida State, led all scorers with 31 points, the host Tigers (18-3) could not overcome the continuous perimeter pressure of the Lions (17-4).

“We used to play with each other on the same team in fourth and fifth grade, so it was fun every year,’’ said Burton, who has received several Division 1 offers already. “[Lassiter is] one of the best competitors that we play each season. It’s just a lot of fun playing against her.’’

Newton South came out with an up-tempo offense unafraid to make mistakes, taking a 12-9 advantage after the first quarter.

Burton began to heat up with a 15-point second quarter, but Lassiter — who netted her 1,000th career point in the game — kept the Tigers within striking distance. They trailed, 28-24, at the half.

But the Lions’ 3-point prowess continued, as seniors Sarah King (11 points) and Zoe Foster (6 points) and sophomore Frankie Silva (9 points) all shot well from beyond the arc.

“Everyone on the team has the green light to shoot the three because everyone can make it,’’ said Burton. “I think everyone being able to do that is so hard to stop defensively. That’s what really gives us energy and gives us confidence having that green light.’’

The Lions cruised down the stretch behind Burton’s smooth ballhandling and Newton South’s relentless offensive pressure.

“South is usually the underdogs of the two schools,’’ said Burton. “So it definitely lifted our spirits as a school.’’

The Lions will play the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between second-seeded Bishop Feehan and seventh-seeded Braintree.
