‘CHiPs’ (or is it ‘CHIPS’?) off the old block

The movies keep going to the TV well. The latest network series to arrive in theaters is “CHiPs,’’ which had a not especially memorable run on NBC, from 1977-83. Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox played a pair of California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers doing their best to keep the peace on and around Los Angeles freeways.

“CHIPS’’ opens on Friday. Maybe they upper-cased the “i’’ and “s’’ since now it’s on a bigger screen. Dax Shepard, who wrote and directed, costars with Michael Pena.

Sometimes a TV remake turns out to be a happy surprise. Hello, “21 Jump Street.’’ But when a 40-year-old TV show’s biggest claim to fame is having Erik Estrada as costar, it seems pretty clear that the bottom of the small-screen barrel is getting scraped. Or is it? Here are some television contenders for feature-film status that Hollywood might, or might not, want to consider.
