A new reader-friendly translation of a popular and critically acclaimed novel by Irish writer MáirtÍn Ó Cadhain is a cause for celebration. Being published on St. Patrick’s Day, the satirical “Graveyard Clay’’ (Yale University) is told almost entirely in dialogue by the inhabitants of a rural cemetery. Translators Liam Mac Con Iomaire and Tim Robinson include annotations (so you learn that “Honest Engine’’ is a local mishearing of “Honest Injun’’) and an essay that situates the author and novel in the world of Irish literature. Theirs is a more precise translation than Alan Titley’s “The Dirty Dust’’ published by Yale University in 2015.
