Extension of $62.5m for Mathieu
Associated Press

The Cardinals and All-Pro defensive back Tyrann Mathieu have agreed to a five-year contract extension.

A person with knowledge of the agreement says the contract totals $62.5 million, with $40 million guaranteed. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the terms were not revealed.

The agreement, announced by the team on Tuesday night, comes despite major injuries to both of Mathieu’s knees in his first three NFL seasons. He has yet to play a full NFL season.

Mathieu, known as the ‘‘Honey Badger’’ to his multitude of fans, sent a tweet earlier Tuesday that said simply, ‘‘blessed.’’

The agreement is further evidence of his remarkable rise after being out of football for a season following his dismissal from LSU for marijuana-related offenses.

Mathieu was considered a risk when the Cardinals chose him in the third round (69th overall) in the 2013 draft, but he quickly developed into one of the team’s top players and evolved into a vocal leader with no off-field issues.

Mathieu’s first contract had $800,000 guaranteed with a multitude of drug tests, but much of the money was spread over four seasons because of concerns about his earlier problems.

The new contract would be the largest for a safety in NFL history.

Although he is listed as a safety and earned All-Pro honors at that position, Mathieu had more plays at cornerback last season.

Basically, he’s a do-everything defensive back.

It was unclear whether the contract had contingencies if Mathieu suffers further serious injuries. The guarantee may be unprecedented for a young player who had undergone two knee surgeries in such a short period of time.

Mathieu tore his left ACL and LCL on a brutal hit against St. Louis in December of his rookie season and tore his right ACL in a non-contact injury following an interception late in a one-sided victory at Philadelphia last Dec. 20. The Cardinals’ defense was noticeably less effect after losing Mathieu, who brings an emotional edge to his game as well as his considerable physical skills and instincts.

Cowboys’ Moore breaks ankle

Dallas quarterback Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in practice, likely forcing the Cowboys to look outside the organization for an experienced backup.

The injury happened during one of the last plays of 11-on-11 work in the second full-pad practice of camp. Guard Jared Smith was pushed back by defensive lineman Lawrence Okoye and stepped on Moore’s ankle.

Without Moore, there isn’t a backup behind Tony Romo with any NFL experience. Dallas drafted former Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott in the fourth round this year, and undrafted free agent Jameill Showers is in his second year. Prescott and Showers have been sharing third-team work.

McClain used ‘purple drank’

Cowboys linebacker Rolando McClain was recently suspended for an opiate commonly referred to as “purple drank’’ — a combination of Sprite, cough syrup, and codeine — not for a failed marijuana test, sources told ESPN.

McClain, who was placed on the reserve/did not report list at the start of training camp, has yet to report. It remains unclear if this will affect whether he will play again in the NFL.

Ravens drop Richardson

Running back Trent Richardson was cut by the Ravens, who lost patience while waiting for the former first-round pick to recover from injuries.

Signed by the Ravens in April, Richardson began training camp on the physically unable to perform list because of hamstring and knee issues. Richardson hasn’t played in the NFL since 2014.

Drafted by Cleveland in 2012 with the third overall pick, the former Alabama star was dealt to Indianapolis during his second season and cut by the Colts in 2014.

He received a tryout with Oakland last year, but did not make the team.

Richardson would have had difficulty making the Ravens, whose deep list of running backs includes Justin Forsett, Terrance West, Lorenzo Taliaferro, and Buck Allen.

Wide receiver Chuck Jacobs was signed to fill Richardson’s roster spot.

Falcons ink LB Freeney

The Falcons agreed to terms on a deal with free agent linebacker Dwight Freeney. Freeney, 36, will give them the established pass-rush leader the team has lacked since John Abraham’s final season with Atlanta in 2012. Terms of the agreement were not immediately available . . . Bengals first-round pick William Jackson III could miss his rookie season after tearing his pectoral muscle, according to ESPN. Cincinnati also lost Tyler Kroft, who hyperextended his left knee during practice. He was scheduled for an exam to determine the severity. The Bengals also signed H-back Ryan Hewitt to a three-year contract extension . . . The Jets activated left guard James Carpenter from the active/physically unable to perform list after he missed the first four days of training camp with a hamstring injury.
