Standing at the corner of Charles and Beacon streets on Monday afternoon, Mayor Martin J. Walsh talked about the upcoming Adidas Boost Boston Games. The competition will feature Olympians in a “street meet’’ on June 18. Sprints, hurdles, pole vaulting, and long jumping will be contested on Charles Street courtesy of a specially constructed 180-meter track that will go up the night before.
“We already know that Boston is a championship city,’’ Walsh said. “We’re home to some of the best sports teams and sports fans in the country. The street meet will showcase our spirit and passion to the world in a new, exciting way.
Big names already have committed to the street meet and a distance festival scheduled for June 17 at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville.
Jamaican Yohan Blake, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 and 200 meters, is confirmed, as is American Jenn Suhr, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the pole vault. At the distance festival, Ethiopian Meseret Defar, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a former world record-holder at 5,000 meters, and New Zealander Nick Willis, the 2008 Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 meters, will participate.
On Monday, former 100-meter world record-holder Maurice Greene talked with the mayor about the street meet. Greene will be back in town next month to take in the event and interact with fans. He sees the street meet as a smart way to showcase track and field for new and existing fans.
“You have to show different sides [of the sport],’’ Greene said. “One thing about track and field is that everybody in the world can relate to it. At some point in time, they were like, ‘I can beat you going from here to here’ or ‘I can jump this far.’ That’s why people gravitate to our sport.
“Events like this make it more exciting. So I think a lot of people are going to come out and be curious and be like, ‘What is this? I’ve never seen track meets put on this way.’ Then, as close as the fans are going to be to the competition, that’s going to make it better for the athletes.’’
