Andrew Ford fired a 40-yard touchdown pass to Andy Isabella and Logan Laurent kicked three field goals to stake UMass to a 16-0 lead in Provo, Utah, and the Minutemen held on to post a 16-10 victory Saturday over BYU — earning a fourth win for the first time as an FBS school.

UMass (4-7) started playing FBS football in 2012 and never won more than three games nor won a road game against a team outside of the Mid-American Conference.

The victory ended both streaks.

The loss gives BYU nine losses for the third time in school history, matching 1949 and 1955. The Cougars have one game remaining next week in Honolulu against Hawaii with the prospect of their first 10-loss season looming.

Ford was 21 for 35 passing for 230 yards, connecting with Isabella seven times for 84 yards. Marquis Young rushed for 59 yards for the Minutemen, who were limited to 69 net yards on the ground.

Rhett Almond got BYU on the board with a 40-yard field goal with 1:35 left in the third quarter and Joe Critchlow hit Matt Bushman with a 6-yard TD pass in the final minute.

UMass recorded seven sacks and held the Cougars to 42 net rushing yards.

Alabama 56, Mercer 0 — Jalen Hurts passed for 180 yards and three touchdowns in a little more than a quarter as the No. 1 Crimson Tide (11-0, 7-0 SEC) routed the Bears (5-6, 2-4) in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama now heads to No. 6 Auburn with the winner of the Iron Bowl facing No. 7 Georgia in the SEC championship game in Atlanta.

Hurts led Alabama to touchdowns on each of his four possessions.

Miami 44, Virginia 28 — Malik Rosier threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score, and the No. 2 Hurricanes (10-0, 7-0 ACC) pulled off their biggest comeback in five years by beating the Cavaliers (6-5, 3-4) in Miami Garden, Fla., to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 15 games.

Jaquan Johnson had an interception return for a touchdown for Miami, which went on a 30-0 run in the second half. The Hurricanes erased a pair of 14-point deficits, and had lost 15 consecutive games in which they trailed at any point by such a margin.

But the defense got a pair of fourth-down stops in Virginia territory in the fourth quarter, and the Hurricanes finished off their first 7-0 home regular season since 1988.

Kurt Benkert was brilliant for Virginia (6-5, 3-4), completing 28 of 37 passes for 384 yards and four TDs.

Oklahoma 41, Kansas 3 — In Lawrence, Kan., Baker Mayfield threw for 257 yards and three TDs to lead the No. 3 Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) over the Jayhawks (1-10, 0-8).

Mayfield had tried shaking hands with Kansas captains Daniel Wise, Dorance Armstrong Jr. and Joe Dineen Jr. after the coin toss for the opening kickoff, but they stared stoically back at him. Mayfield quickly pulled his hand away, clapped a couple of times and set about burnishing his Heisman Trophy candidacy.

Clemson 61, Citadel 3 — Kelly Bryant threw for 230 yards and three TDs and was out of the game before halftime as the No. 4 Tigers (10-1, 7-1 ACC) comfortably remained in the playoff race with a rout of the FCS Bulldogs (5-6) in Clemson, S.C.

Wisconsin 24, Michigan 10 — Alex Hornibrook’s 24-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Taylor in third quarter broke open a defensive slugfest, Kendric Pryor scored on an end-around, and the No. 5 Badgers (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten) stayed unbeaten by defeating the No. 19 Wolverines (8-3, 5-3) in Madison, Wis.

Jonathan Taylor finished with 132 yards on 19 carries for Wisconsin, with 87 yards in the second half.

Auburn 42, Louisiana-Monroe 14 — Darius Slayton’s 50-yard scoring catch late in the first half gave the No. 6 Tigers (9-2) the lead over the Warhawks (4-6) before they pulled away in Auburn, Ala., to set up next week’s visit from No. 1 Alabama.

Kerryon Johnson, the SEC’s leading rusher, ran for 137 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

Georgia 42, Kentucky 13 — Nick Chubb and Sony Michel led a dominant running game and the No. 7 Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1 SEC) bounced back from their first loss, topping the Wildcats (7-4, 4-4) in Athens, Ga.

Chubb rushed for 151 and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard burst down the sideline to seal the victory early in the fourth quarter. Michel rambled for 87 yards and three scores of his own, most notably a 37-yard TD that sent the Bulldogs into the half with a 21-6 lead.

Ohio State 52, Illinois 14 — The No. 8 Buckeyes (9-2, 7-1) scored on their first six possessions — including J.T. Barrett’s 100th career touchdown pass — and clinched the Big Ten title in a rout of the Illini (2-9, 0-9) in Columbus, Ohio.

Notre Dame 24, Navy 17 — Brandon Wimbush threw for 164 yards and two TDs and ran for a score as the No. 9 Fighting Irish (9-2) rallied in the rain and wind in South Bend, Ind., to beat the Midshipmen (6-4).

Wearing throwback uniforms with the name Rockne on the back of every player’s jersey and helmets designed to evoke the leather tops from the era of legendary coach Knute Rockne, Notre Dame kept its slim national championship hopes alive heading into its regular-season finale next Saturday at Stanford.

Running back Josh Adams, who was limited to 62 rushing yards by injuries in Notre Dame’s previous two games against Wake Forest and Miami, topped the century mark for the seventh time, finishing with 106 yards on 18 carries.

Kansas St. 45, Oklahoma St. 40 — Byron Pringle caught three TD passes and returned a kickoff for another score as the Wildcats (6-5, 4-4 Big 12) stunned the No. 10 Cowboys (8-3, 5-3) in Stillwater, Okla.

Oklahoma State nearly erased a 29-point deficit in the second half, but Kansas State held on to become bowl eligible for the eighth consecutive season.

Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph passed for 425 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score. James Washington caught eight passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns for the Cowboy.

TCU 27, Texas Tech 3 — Freshman quarterback Shawn Robinson ran for 84 yards and threw a key second-half touchdown pass in his first career start as the No. 11 Horned Frogs (9-2, 6-2) beat the Red Raiders (5-6, 2-6) in Lubbock, Tex., to stay in contention for a spot in the Big 12 championship game.

Robinson, who won a Texas Class 6A state high school championship last season, filled in for Kenny Hill. The senior didn’t even make the trip because of an unspecified injury.

Penn St. 56, Nebraska 44 — Saquon Barkley broke Penn State’s career touchdown record with three scores and had 208 of 224 total yards in the first half as the No. 13 Nittany Lions (9-2, 6-2 Big 10) beat the Cornhuskers (4-7, 3-5) in State College, Pa.

Barkley passed Lydell Mitchell for the record with his 39th touchdown.

Trace McSorley ran for a touchdown and threw for 325 yards on 24-of-36 passing with three touchdown passes for Penn State. Mike Gesicki caught two scoring passes and became Penn State’s career touchdowns leader by a tight end with 13, and DeAndre Thompkins also had a touchdown catch.

UCF 45, Temple 19 — McKenzie Milton threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score as the No. 14 Knights (10-0, 7-0 AAC) routed the Owls (5-6, 3-4) in Philadelphia to stay unbeaten heading into a showdown with rival USF.

Shaquem Griffin, the 2016 AAC defensive player of the year whose left hand was amputated when he was 4, was all over the field for the UCF defense. He forced a fumble in the first half that set up a score and made his second career interception in the second half, running step-for-step down field with a receiver and cradling the ball into his chest.

Frank Nutile, who helped revive Temple’s offense when he took over at quarterback four games ago, was picked off four times.

Mississippi State 28, Arkansas 21 — Nick Fitzgerald threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Deddrick Thomas with 17 seconds remaining, and the No. 17 Bulldogs (8-3, 4-3 SEC) survived a lackluster performance and four fumbles to beat the Razorbacks (4-7, 1-6) in Fayetteville, Ark.

Mississippi State won at least eight games in a season for the fourth time in coach Dan Mullen’s nine years with the victory. They had already earned bowl eligibility for a school-record eighth straight season.

Fitzgerald accounted for three touchdowns and totaled 254 yards in the win, finishing 12-of-23 passing for 153 yards and rushing 22 times for 101 yards. The junior threw for a pair of TDs and rushed for another.

Memphis 66, SMU 45 — Darrell Henderson rushed for 147 yards, including two long touchdowns, and Riley Ferguson threw for 320 yards and two scores as the No. 18 Tigers (9-1, 6-1) claimed the AAC West Division championship with a victory over the visiting Mustangs (6-4, 3-4).

In addition to his throwing TDs, Ferguson scored on three runs as Memphis won its sixth straight and claimed a spot in the conference’s Dec. 2 championship game. Patrick Taylor had 112 yards rushing, while Anthony Miller had 163 yards receiving. Both scored two TDs each.

Xavier Jones rushed for 175 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs.

LSU 30, Tennessee 10 — Derrius Guice and Darrel Williams combined for 165 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the No. 21 Tigers (8-3, 5-2) beat the Volunteers (4-7, 0-7) in Knoxville, Tenn.

Guice ran 24 times for 97 yards and one touchdown to help LSU win for the fifth time in its last six games. Williams rushed for 68 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries.

Tennessee was playing its first game under interim head coach Brady Hoke after the firing of Butch Jones.

Michigan State 17, Maryland 7 — LJ Scott ran for 147 yards and a TD to lead the No. 22 Spartans (8-3, 6-2) to a snowy victory over the Terrapins (4-7, 2-6) in East Lansing, Mich.

Michigan State rushed for 271 yards, and that was about the only way they could move the ball in yet another of its game affected by the elements. Quarterback Brian Lewerke was 2 of 14 for 20 yards, and one of his completions was a shovel pass late in the third quarter.

Texas 28, West Virginia 14 — Sam Ehlinger threw two touchdown passes and the Longhorns 6-5, 5-3) became bowl eligible under first-year coach Tom Herman with a victory over the No. 24 Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va.

Men’s basketball

Manhattan 73, Harvard 69 — Rich Williams scored 20 points and Calvin Crawford had 19 as the Jaspers (2-0) beat the Crimson (2-2) in New York.

Seth Towns scored 17 points, Chris Lewis and Bryce Aiken added 12 apiece to lead Harvard.

Men’s hockey

BU 7, Maine 0 — Shane Bowers scored a pair of goals to lead the 18th-ranked Terriers (6-7-1, 4-4-1 Hockey East) over the Black Bears (4-6, 3-3) in Orono, Maine.

BU also received goals from Jordan Greenway, Brady Tkachuk, Hank Crone, Bobo Carpenter, and Logan Cockrell. Jake Oetinger made 30 saves to record the shutout.
