Students at a middle school in Wareham can thank seagulls for an early start to their February break.
School was canceled at Wareham Middle School Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday after seagulls dropped so many clams on a section of its membrane roof that it was cut, Wareham School Superintendent Kimberly Shaver-Hood said in an e-mail.
“Seagulls drop clams as they are flying in order to break the shells and get to the food inside the shell,’’ Shaver-Hood said. “The shells dropped from the high area cut the roof surface.’’
The cut was near a drain on the roof, and when Tuesday’s storm hit, water leaked into the school, Shaver-Hood said.
The leak was discovered in the roof around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday after water was discovered in the school’s A wing, which contains the library, technology room, and some classrooms, Shaver-Hood said.
The town building inspector closed the school, prompting the cancellation of classes, Shaver-Hood said.
Students from Minot Forest Elementary School will also be missing classes as they had been temporarily relocated to the middle school while a new elementary school is being built at the location of their former one on Minot Avenue, Shaver-Hood said.
The school district hopes repairs to the Wareham Middle School will be completed by early next week, Shaver-Hood said. She said he did not know what the cost would be.
“We are currently in the process of drying out and will be making repairs,’’ she said.
Students will be forced to make up the missed school days later as per state regulations, Shaver-Hood said.
