There’s another word for covert fund-raising: theft
Mike Ross (“To get revenue, get creative,’’ Ideas, Sept. 3) lauds a New York hotel for adding a charge to his bill without his consent or knowledge, because it supposedly funds a cause he deems worthy (one wonders how much of the charges actually go to the charity). He suggests that we extend this to more places as a wonderful way to raise money without anyone knowing that they are being charged.
This is theft.
Ross suggests that the hotel hopes the customers won’t notice the extra charge. It would take a former Boston city councilor to see this tactic as a good way to raise money on the sly.
Where is his interest in the consumer on this issue?
