Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter considered taking Matt Wieters out of the game after the catcher took a hard foul ball off his mask in the fifth inning.

That proved to be a game-changing decision.

Wieters hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Jason Grilli in the eighth to lead the Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday in Baltimore.

Baltimore pulled within three games of the first-place Blue Jays, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

‘‘It’s a big game,’’ Wieters said. ‘‘We’re going to be playing a lot of teams in the division, so there are going to be a lot of big games.’’

Michael Saunders drilled a two-run shot off Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez that tied the score, 3-3, in the seventh.

Blue Jays lefthander J.A. Happ fell short of tying Boston’s Rick Porcello for the major league lead with 18 wins.

Indians 5, Twins 4 — Francisco Lindor drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and host Cleveland survived another poor start by Josh Tomlin (four runs, seven hits in 1⅔ innings) to hand Minnesota its 12th straight loss.

Rangers 8, Mariners 7 — Rougned Odor hit a game-ending two-run homer as host Texas won its fourth straight game.

Tigers 8, White Sox 4 — In Detroit, Ian Kinsler homered and drove in four runs as the Tigers rallied to victory.

Cubs 3, Pirates 0 — Kyle Hendricks threw seven dominant innings to lower the majors’ best ERA to 2.09 and Anthony Rizzo homered to lead host Chicago.

Nationals 3, Phillies 2 — Max Scherzer (15-7) didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and was dominant through eight as visiting Washington continued its mastery of Philadelphia. Scherzer improved to 7-1 in his career against the Phillies.

Mets 7, Marlins 4 — Curtis Granderson came off the bench and homered twice and Jose Reyes had four hits to help host New York surge past Miami for second place in the NL East.

Cardinals 2, Brewers 1 — Zach Duke stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout in the 10th inning after Randal Grichuk hit an RBI single in the top half of the inning to lift visiting St. Louis.

Astros 3, Athletics 1 — Collin McHugh threw six scoreless innings and Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis homered to spark host Houston.

Braves 7, Padres 3 — Julio Teheran won for the first time in 10 starts and rookie Dansby Swanson drove in three runs as Atlanta improved to 20-44 at home, worst in the majors.
