Tom Brady addressed the ESPN the Magazine piece detailing a rift between himself and Bill Belichick, saying Saturday night on Westwood One radio that he has a “great’’ relationship with Belichick.
“We’ve worked together for 18 years. There’s no coach I’d rather play for and I’ve loved my experience here,’’ Brady told host Jim Gray. “I certainly couldn’t be the player I am today without playing for such a great coach.’’
“That obviously doesn’t sell many newspapers, but to me I’ve had such gratitude toward my time here and I’ve loved my experience. We’ve had a great season thus far and hopefully we can write a great ending.’’
There has been mounting tension behind the scenes at Gillette Stadium this year. The Globe reported in December that Belichick stopped allowing Brady’s business partner and fitness guru, Alex Guerrero, from flying on the Patriots’ team plane or standing on the sideline and reduced his access to players inside Gillette Stadium.
And ESPN the Magazine released a report on Friday stating that Brady has grown weary of Belichick’s negativity, and that Brady won an internal power struggle when team owner Robert Kraft made the decision to trade Jimmy Garoppolo in October.
Brady brushed off the report of a fractured relationship with Belichick as “nonsense.’’
“Along with winning and great success comes a lot of things. . . . It forces people to be creative with what they talk about and the things that they write and the things that they may speculate on,’’ Brady said. “My relationships with everybody that I deal with I feel are so positive. To think anything differently of that is complete nonsense. I love the fact where we’re at as a team. I want my focus and energy to be where it needs to be, which is on the biggest game of the year.’’
Brady said the reports detailing some of the friction behind the scenes could galvanize the Patriots as they prepare for their playoff game next Saturday.
“In so many ways, I think adversity that our team has faced over the years only makes us stronger,’’ Brady said. “I think for so long we’ve proven that we ignore the noise, we do our job, we speak for ourselves and we focus on what we need to do to help the team win.
“It would be very unfortunate if we let this opportunity get away from us.’’
Brady stepped around a question about whether he expects to end his career with the Patriots.
“I think there’s a humility that you understand you’re not bigger than any of this, and I believe I’m certainly not,’’ he said. “I love this team, I love this organization, and hopefully we can go out and make everybody proud by finishing the season the right way.’’
