Three students in the region were selected from more than 1,000 entrants as winners of the Northern Essex Community College eighth annual Peace Poetry Contest. Finn Stinson, a second-grader at the Sparhawk School in Amesbury, won the K-2 division with “The Dove.’’ Alva Yanowitz, a fifth-grader at Sanborn Elementary School in Andover, won in grades 3 through 5 with “The Everlasting Battle.’’ Amanda Toussaint, a senior at Methuen High, won in grades 9 through 12 with “Our Disturbance.’’

North Shore Bank CEO Dave LaFlamme announced he will be retiring later this year. LaFlamme has been in banking for 40 years, with 10 years as CEO at North Shore Bank and the prior 20 years as executive vice president at TD Bank. He is also involved in the community, having served as a chairman for Home Health Foundation, Haverhill YMCA, and the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. He will be succeeded by Kevin Tierney, the bank’s current president.

Gloucester Police Chief Leonard Campanello will present a speech on opioid addiction and providing amnesty and rehabilitation instead of incarceration. The speech, which is free and open to the public, will be presented on May 31 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Waring School in Beverly.

Campanello was recently honored by President Obama as a “Champion of Change.’’During April, 844 books were collected by Members Plus Credit Union, headquartered in Medford, during a children’s book drive. The books were donated to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. The statewide effort was helped especially by Maggie and Sarah Pendenza from Mount Alvernia High School of Newton, who together collected several hundred books.

Care Dimensions is offering a six-week yoga class in Danvers called Yoga for Living with Loss. The hourlong class, run by instructor Nancy Sheena Sarles, will provide support for grievers’ body, mind, and spirit. Two classes will be held, one on Tuesdays beginning May 31 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and one on Wednesdays beginning June 1 from 11 a.m. to noon. The cost is $50. The classes will be held at the Bertolon Center for Grief & Healing, 78 Liberty St. To register, call 855-774-5100 or e-mail grief@caredimensions.org.
