Much has been said — and tweeted — about “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’’ since it was released Sunday. Some are hailing it as the eighth story in the “Harry Potter’’ series, but it’s not. It’s merely the script of the London stage play penned by J.K. Rowling and screenwriter Jack Thorne. Still, “Potter’’ fans are reading it closely and some are surprised to learn that the full name of the character Moaning Myrtle is actually Myrtle Elizabeth Warren. While it’s true that Myrtle herself confirms that fact for the first time in “The Cursed Child,’’ it’s been known to hardcore “Harry Potter’’ fans for a while. But, more importantly, it’s not a tip of the hat to Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. A year ago, in response to a reader, Rowling tweeted: “Moaning Myrtle’s full name was Myrtle Elizabeth Warren.’’ Then, later, when some of her followers noted the similarity between Myrtle’s name and the name of the liberal senator, Rowling tweeted: “[n]othing to do with the United States Elizabeth Warren. ‘Elizabeth’ is just one of those classic British middle names,’’ the author continued. “[T]he moment I’d committed myself, I thought: uh oh. I didn’t make up ‘Warren’ on the spot. I already knew Warren.’’ Intentional or not, we’re guessing the senator enjoys the name-check.
