A car carrying the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Bangor, Maine, for a New England Patriots fan event crashed into a deer early Saturday morning, officials said.

The Super Bowl trophy was en route to the Cross Insurance Center, where it was on display Saturday afternoon. Fans could take pictures with it, along with mascot Pat Patriot and a Patriots cheerleader.

“Everyone is fine and the trophy is fine, but the car is not fine,’’ said Stacey James, a Patriots spokesman. The team posted a picture of the trophy on Twitter, showing that it arrived to the event on time.

State Police said the crash happened at 1:12 a.m. on Interstate 95 in Fairfield, Maine, about 50 miles west of Bangor.

The driver headed to Bangor on Friday night to avoid being slowed down by the storm, James said, but he was instead delayed by the crash.

James said the driver will not be cited.

Trooper Tyler Maloon, who responded to the scene, said he was excited to have the trophy in his cruiser.

“I haven’t been able to put it into any words,’’ he said. “I don’t really know how to explain it [as] a sports fan.’’

Maloon said he is a Patriots fan and played football. He got to take a picture with the trophy and touch it, but not hold it. “I wasn’t going to push my luck,’’ Maloon said.

He gave the driver of the car and his wife a ride to a 24-hour gas station in Pittsfield because their car was seriously damaged.

The deer involved in the crash died, Maloon said.

James said other Patriots events are to be held in Vermont over the upcoming week. The trophy is also expected at the Massachusetts State House on Wednesday, he said.

Since the Patriots won the Super Bowl in overtime against the Atlanta Falcons in February, the trophy has traveled to multiple places, including the parade in Boston and a rally in Providence.

“There’s a window of time where we try to make it available and make sure that it gets to each state,’’ he said.
