A ‘scape’ from reality
By Michael Andor Brodeur

If you’ve ever toyed around with the panorama features of your smartphone camera, you’ve likely also played with the attendant glitches of the form, caused by moving subjects or unsteady panning — surreal vistas populated by very long dogs and even longer cats.

An experimental new app from Google takes this bug and turns it into a feature. Sprayscape identifies as a “perfectly imperfect VR-ish camera,’’ and that blurry self-portrait turns out to be perfectly appropriate.

Using your phone’s gyroscope and camera, Sprayscape lets you capture images and “spray’’ them across an immersive 360-degree canvas. Press your thumb down to paint in broad strokes, or tap it to grab quick snatches — your “scape’’ is bound only by your imagination (and the visible world). Scapes can then be shared through unique URLs over social media or email and viewed through a Cardboard VR headset. If you thought that two-legged kitty was trippy, just wait.

PRO: As simple and single-purposed as Sprayscape is, it’s equally as charming and cool — and a worthwhile reminder VR is still in an exciting stage of self-discovery. Even a goofball app like Sprayscape can open up exciting creative possibilities.

CON: Android only? Come on now, Goog.
