A 30-year-old Belmont man was shot and killed in front of Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge Tuesday night, and another man was wounded, in an incident that officials said appeared to be “a targeted event.’’

“There are a couple different scenarios that we’re still looking into, but at this point it does appear to be targeted, not random,’’ said Cambridge police spokesman Jeremy Warnick on Wednesday.

Officials identified Armando Hernandez Jr. as the man who was killed at about 10 p.m. in the 300 block of Mt. Auburn Street. The second man was in stable condition Wednesday and was being treated for a leg injury, Warnick said. His name was not released. No arrests have been made.

Hernandez’s friends told television reporters that he was a father of four and a good person. They spoke briefly and then said they were not able to talk further.

Cambridge police had had no involvement with Hernandez in recent years, said Warnick.

Residents and those in the area at the time of the shooting reported hearing between five and 10 gunshots, fired erratically.

Jocelyn Giunta, who lives nearby, said when she heard the shots, she immediately thought it was gunfire and then assumed that since the area was so safe, it must be something else, like metal trash cans banging.

“I think it’s isolated,’’ she said of the burst of violence. “God, I hope so.’’

Hernandez’s family has started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for his funeral.

Police asked anyone with information related to the incident to contact Cambridge police at 617-349-3300.
