Discovery: “War No More: Three Centuries of American Antiwar & Peace Writing’’
“War No More: Three Centuries of American Antiwar & Peace Writing’’ (Library of America) draws on about 150 sources, including poets and songwriters. Edited by Wellesley College professor Lawrence Rosenwald, it includes a short story by Tim O’Brien, Mark Twain’s parody of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,’’ an excerpt from the Book of Mormon, and the words of Montana congresswoman Jeannette Rankin, who voted against entering World War I and declaring war on Japan. The voices of veterans — from the Civil War to the war in Iraq — are here, too. In addition to the readings, there’s a detailed chronology of the antiwar movement and a portfolio of photographs.
