Deposed tennis Hall of Famer Bob Hewitt began serving a six-year prison sentence in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, for raping two underage girls he coached and indecently assaulting another in the 1980s and ’90s. Hewitt, 76, had twice filed appeals that delayed his sentence after he was convicted of the crimes 18 months ago. Last October, the former Boston Lobsters star also was found civilly responsible in US District Court in Boston for raping Heather Crowe Conner, of West Newbury, when she was his 14-year-old tennis student in 1975. The cases against Hewitt stemmed from a 2011 investigation by the Globe.

MLB: Disclosures enforced
Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed confidence Major League Baseball teams fully disclose medical records, but said his office has demonstrated it will use discipline as a way to discourage rules violations. Preller was hit with the unprecedented suspension of 30 days without pay for his actions in the Drew Pomeranz trade to the Red Sox. While he declined to detail his reasoning for that specific penalty in the Padres case, Manfred said, ‘‘I think the penalty speaks for itself.’’ . . . Rose accuser must be ID’d
A 30-year-old woman accusing NBA star Derrick Rose of rape cannot remain anonymous at her upcoming civil trial, a Los Angeles judge ruled. Lawyers for the woman, who is identified in court documents as Jane Doe, argued her privacy should be protected because she is vulnerable and she already has been harassed after her name was leaked. US District Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald said the law was very clear on the issue and he wouldn’t close his courtroom to protect her identity. He said any decision by the news media about whether to name her is a journalistic decision.
